Thebes - west bank of the Nile

Thebes is the Greek designation of the city known in the New Kingdom as niwt-imn, "The City of Amun". It is located on the east bank of the river Nile. In modern usage, however, the mortuary temples and tombs on the west bank of the river Nile are generally thought of as being part of Thebes.
Thebes was the capital of Waset, the fourth Upper Egyptian district. The city was the capital of Egypt during part of the Eleventh Dynasty (Middle Kingdom), and most of the Eighteenth Dynasty (New Kingdom).

This set shows images from the valley of the kings, the Colossi of Memnon (mortuary temple of Amenhotep III) and ancient village of Deir el Medina.
The archeological sites of Deir el-Bahri, Medinet Habu, Luxor and Karnak - the latter two on the east bank - are featured in separate sets of images.
