Luxor - the Temple

The temple of Luxor is located on the east bank of the River Nile in the city today known as Luxor (ancient Thebes). It was connected with the nearby temple of Karnak by an avenue of sphinxes, many of which still remain today.
The temple was dedicated to the Theban Triad of Amun, Mut, and Chons. Construction begun during the reign of Amenhotep III in the 14th century BC and the temple was vastly expanded under Ramses II and later restored by Alexander the Great around 320 BC.
By the time of the Arab conquest, the temple had fallen into disrepair and was almost completely buried underneath sand and river silt. In the 13th century the Mosque of Abu el-Haggag was built on top of the temple.
