Karnak - precinct of Amon-Re
The temple of Karnak, located on the banks of the River Nile
2.5 km north of Luxor, consists of four main parts. The largest part
is known as the precinct of Amon-Re.
Construction work at Karnak began in the 16th century BC.
Approximately 30 pharaohs contributed to the buildings,
enabling it to reach a size, complexity and diversity not seen elsewhere.
The layout of the precinct of Amon-Re, which contains the large temple of Amon and
several smaller temples and sanctuaries, is dominated by two main axes:
An east-west axis and a north-south axis with overall ten larger pylons.
Among its most known structures and features are the temple of Amon-Re, the temple of Ramses III,
the great hypostyle hall with its central pillars standing about 20m tall,
Thutmose III & Hatshepsut's obelisks, and the sacred lake.
The precinct of Amon-Re was connected with the nearby temple at Luxor by
an avenue of sphinxes.
